Southern Coastal

Well, I just told you in my last post how I love clean modern lines. Today though, Erin of House of Turquoise, posted about a cute, cute cottage in South Carolina.
I had recently seen the photos in Southern Living magazine and fell in love with this place.
"Southern coastal cottage" is just another one of my many fave house designs.....
but you can always outfit the interior of any cottage with the more modern streamlined furniture & modern lighting. (like I talked about in the last post)
Shutters on a porch are great for added dimension & color for any facade, but they're also great for privacy when you need it. Especially if your house sits just next to your neighbors. Sometimes you just prefer to have your morning coffee in your p.j's without someone next door right there as you walk out. Just add some shutters installed in the frame of the porch railing, on one or both sides for that extra side privacy. When you're ready to chat with the neighbor & invite them over for drinks, then open them back up! Shutters are a great because you can regulate the amount of privacy you prefer with the louvers, vs. a roll up shade.

Head on over to House of Turquoise for more pics of this cute place. As you know, I LOVE the color turquoise, and therefore LOVE her blog!!

My husband was wearing a turquoise shirt the other day and we had to laugh because my friend said "she's even got you wearing turquoise now!".....
Well..... I DID buy him that color t-shirt....but he honestly likes the color too!

Thinking of "turquoise"....time to head out to the pool & get off this computer!
yall have a great weekend,

Simply Modern

My daughter Jackie & I recently went to a good friends' bridal kitchen shower in Austin. The shower was held in a very cool modern house overlooking Lake Austin.

In my older posts, I've written about Lake Travis, the largest lake in Austin. Well, Lake Austin is just below the dam of Lake Travis, also within Austin, and closer to the heart of the city. Lake Austin's water is colder and it's a calm lake because it's basically a river that runs through our city. Great for water skiing and riding a boat to great restaurants, etc..

Anyways, back to the shower event.......wish I would've remembered my good camera. However, I took pics with the Iphone cuz I figured you'd still like to see this house.
The house is ultra modern and beautiful, inside and out.

The lake view is my fave feature of this dwelling. However, I do love their statement front door!Watch the way it opens from the inside, as Jackie shows you:

Walking on into the main living room is a grouping of modern pieces. The hostess entertains alot and this is a very cool room for conversations & admiring some art.Within this same room, is the dining room and had to share the custom blown glass pendant lighting, that hangs above their formal table. Truly a work of art:View from the main room out to the lake:
From the main level, you walk down a beautiful, circular staircase to the lower level. On this level, there's a fun party room large enough to set up dining tables or to use as a dance floor. The room also has an entertaining bar & a "catering" kitchen off to the side , behind closed doors. The party level also has a pilates room, swimming pool outside, and an amazing home theater room. The house works so well for events: the caterer drives to the lower level garage & unloads onto that level.

Once inside, the caterer sets up in their own "catering" kitchen. Therefore the "help" doesn't even go into their personal kitchen or dwelling upstairs.

Notice the acoustical ceiling treatment in the party room:
Entertaining bar in the party room:Pool outside on the same level:

As part of the kitchen bridal shower decor, they had flowers decorating Cuisinart & OXO gadgets, so the bride-to-be could take home, and use later:
(the OXO gadgets were hidden amongst the flowers above, on the lower level of the tiered basket)

From the party room, through a hidden door, concealed within a modern wood wall, is the fun theater with reclining comfy microsuede chairs :
After we all had our bridal shower fun on the party level, we walked up to the 4th story observation deck to visit & enjoy the view:

Owl dummies flank the ledges to scare away the birds from making a mess on the deck! (alot of people use the owls at beachhouses too , for the sea gulls)
(Jackie with her good friend Ally , the bride-to-be)

Thinking of the "statement door " & modern abodes, I thought I'd share another modern Austin house.
The dwelling is situated just below the dam of Lake Austin. (Remember, there's Lake Travis, then a dam that feeds into Lake Austin. Then the next dam feeds into Lady Bird Lake. Lady Bird Lake runs through the urban part of downtown.)

The house is an amazing composition of different buildings , but has alot of the same features as the "shower" house:

statement door:

Beautiful downtown skyline view:( older pic though....there are now TALL lofts that line the skyline)

Love the doors, but also love the landscape details from Big Red Sun:
After being in the modern uncluttered "bridal shower" home, I walked into my own front door and realized how much "stuff" I had in my house. I went through a crazy clean up/edit mode rightaway. I crave modern streamlined decor because it's peaceful and I can just think more clearly in an uncluttered space. I love simplistic, modern interiors now because they're just more updated & fresh. I now have an amazing amount of "stuff" that needs to find a new home. Funny how alot of us accumulate so many things as we get older in years. We get to this plateau of saturation of "stuff", and realize it's not so important anymore. Once we start editing our homes, it can be so therapeutic and liberating! Feels good; like cleaning out an overstuffed closet or purse.

In the last 3 years, we've changed things around such as adding in more classic modern furniture pieces & modern lighting. You can always update and modernize any style home simply by adding those simple interior updates. Modern classic style works in any home & doesn't have to be "cold". You can still create a warm, welcoming home......you just need to know how to create the right mix.
After editing my house, Jackie walked in the next day, and said it looked like I was moving! I felt the same way....I loved it, but yeah, it looked like our house looked before we unloaded all the "stuff" back on moving day!
I love the "just moved in" look though....kind of like staging! Simple, not cluttered.....
How long do you think it will last? Cuz you know winter's around the corner when we all "nest" again!
Wish me luck for "keeping it simple".

All the best,

Bedroom Mood Board

I know it's been a while since I posted but I'm still here.   :)  I've been busy getting the kids ready for school which starts next week. I don't know why school starts so early in the south, can school start after labor day?  I have to agree with my kids, "It's sucks".

Below is a mood board that is to be used in conjunction with this mood board  that was created for my sister's living room.  I'm a firm believer that you should always take in consideration how one room reveals into the next and plan your design accordingly. For this mood board I went with the same soothing colors but I also used numerous graphic patterns in the bedding and pillows that can be easily updated from year to year.

Do you think that it's important in design how each room reveals unto the next room or it shouldn't really matter?

Happy Bday Jackie!

A personal post today, to wish my daughter Jacquelyn Leigh, a happy 22nd birthday!!
We celebrated her "Tiara Tuesday" yesterday.

Thinking of her always reminds me of anything pink.....and in her bday honor, I'm sharing some pink:

Love the modern edge of this bathroom below.....not sure how it would feel to take a shower in that saturated shade of pink, but the look is modern & fun. Wonder if this bathroom was created for 3 teen girls? Can you imagine the fun girly girl convos in here?
Tile rug is a fun touch, as well as the lighting above the mirror. I've seen this light fixture hung low many times above a dining table, but never as bathroom lighting and I think it's brilliant! The Roman Shade pulls the rug and the pink shower all together.
The entry door into the bathroom is a cool style with the squared doorknob....looks like they have frosted glass for privacy.

Sweet & simple pink:

Adore this saying from the beautiful Audrey Hepburn:

Jackie's always been a big fan of Betsey Johnson and our cat is even named Betsey! One day Betsey decided my water was her water! Not!
Did yall ever see Betsey Johnson's amazing Mexico villa , once on the internet? I couldn't find it anywhere on the internet today, so maybe they don't rent it anymore. But she used to have a fabby villa outside of Puerto Vallarta, decorated in a very fun bohemian way : "Frida Kahlo meets Carmen Miranda" decor. I always dreamed of taking Jackie to that villa for a surprise birthday one day.....wouldn't that be fun?! Let me know if you ever can locate it.....I remember it being in a great locale, but probably outa my price range!

Jackie, we celebrate you and always keep enjoying life in the "Betsey Johnson" way. Full of color & happiness!
Love you mucho girl!

Olive with a twist!

My daughter's friend Anna, asked me what wall paint color and accents she could use for her college apartment, with her existing pieces. The living room is the room she's wanting to paint right now and here are the dictating pieces:
1) olive slipcovered sofa &
2) white accent tables, with a white desk.

Here's what I say to this request:
"Olive with a twist please...olive it"
(pronounced " i loooove it" with a funky Texas accent)

Granted there are varying colors of olive and I haven't seen Anna's olive slipcover. I'd assume it's similar to the sofa in the first image above. However, the following images should inspire Anna to come up with creative ideas to mix in color to any varying shade of greens.

I say we capitalize on the olive as a strong overall color scheme with accenting fabrics, rug & accessories. Brighten the walls with a nice simple white , then paint one accent wall in one of these colors: a soft lemony yellow, blues, pinks or even lilac! Then add some great pillows and/or a great rug in the coordinating paint colors to make the room pop.
I'm showcasing some fave pics to give Anna the inspiration below.

Bluesy Olives:
A great paint color for this color combo would be Benjamin Moore Palladium Blue with a crisp white trim paint.
Here's a room, below, with blue walls & olive sofa. This room was created by Mike and Maddie, winners in the Small Cool Contest from Apartment Therapy.

Or keep the room bright with a white paint, such as Benjamin Moore Silver Satin or Simply White, then just paint the accent wall blue. By doing so, you allow the small spaces to feel larger. On the color accent wall, it's fun to use white shelves to make the color look crisp. Of course I always like a bright white trim paint next to the accent color!

For other rooms in the blue and olive scheme, you could possibly use a great indoor /outdoor rug from Dash and Albert :

Add in a splash of great color with fun pillows from Pine Cone Hill:Personalized pillow with monogram, from Serena and Lily:

A large wool rug would be comfy on the toes & add visual interest, from Company C.

...I always love a good bargain from Target. Check out the cute chair from Target ....could be very stylish with an olive sofa!

Softy for Pinks with Olive!

I could so easily see soft pink walls mixed with an olive sofa....Or paint all the walls white, then paint the accent wall pink.

Olive with lilacs and yellows, fun!

( images above via Blu Label Bungalow)

Green/grey/browns, very classic!A crewel embroidered lampshade (sorry, can't remember WHERE I found this lamp....help anyone??):
Add a great rug to this lamp choice from Layla Grace:

Simply White!

I absolutely love the glam and classic simplicity to this room. Notice the walls are just white , with white ceilings, black doors. Now notice the floors are white also. You could get the same effect by using a white carpet over dark floors, if pet hair isn't an issue! Crisp and very chic.

Olive with a Lemon Twist!
You can never go wrong mixing olive with yellow....
A great ceiling paint for a yellow/olive color scheme would be high gloss Benjamin Moore "Lemon Meringue"! (Lemon Meringue is also a good paint choice if you want an accent wall, but in a flat paint)

Turquoise and Olive, Pura Vida!

You know how much "olive" turquoise, right??!! You could paint the accent wall in a dreamy soft aqua color such as Valspar Aquatic Edge. Aqua looks great as a backdrop to olive and turquoise.

Another fun accent paint color is Benjamin Moore Jalapeno Pepper . (similar to the green paint below) However, I like to use white or bright colored accents when using a saturated green paint. (such as white shelving against the green paint with colorful accessories on the shelves) By doing so, you let the room stay fresh/active/bright feeling and not depressingly dark. Now notice below how the pillows add more colors & punch to the room. Anna could simply add some fun pillows to the sofa to bring in some color, to an otherwise bland solid covered sofa.
( image via Blu Label Bungalow)

Love the citrus touches to this room.....think how bland the sofa would be without the pillows.

Then if you want to continue the olive scheme into the bathroom, then add this "faux anthropologie " shower curtain from Designer Linens Outlet.

I hoped I've inspired you with some great choices for olive today. And if you'd like to share another olive twist idea with Anna, then please email your pics & I'll be happy to post them!

Have a great day with a twist!
