EXTENDING YOUR KITCHEN ISLAND

(photos above Gish Photography)

Our island is very large and always the main conversation area. We wanted to be able to have guests sit around the island while someone was preparing food.
We had a local metal fabricator create the island extension out of stainless steel. Our subs mounted the extension onto the island using oil rubbed bronze support brackets. There's about 4 of the brackets because of the weight. The deep drawers under the stainless pull out enough so that we can still store items in there easily.
Our bar stools used to be taller, but our subs cut them down to fit the counter.
If you have stainless fabricated, just be sure you have a good fabricator that will round the edges or they can be sharp.

Hey readers don't forget to enter the giveaway for a linen pillow, read my older post for details!! The giveaway winner will be announced on Sunday March 25th!
And a big shout out & hugs to Erin at House of Turquoise for sharing my work and giveaway on her blog!

SNEAK PEEK INTO MY KITCHEN

We had our photographer, Christin Gish, here this weekend and took loads of pictures of our house. In the coming days, I'll share more photos, but here's a sneak peek!
(remember you can always enlarge a photo by clicking on the photo)

Notice from the bottom picture that we used to have standard niches on either side of the fireplace. The fireplace was a cut stone surround with a wood mantel ledge. We had our carpenter create stained cedar cabinets in a green/grey stain for the niches, and added chunky iron handles I found on EBAY. The fireplace was recreated with rubble rock and we added a cut wood mantel.
We also repainted the whole room. The color used to be a gold, and now it's a builder's grade white. I needed to save $ on the painting budget, so we left the existing trim in BM Navajo White.

In the kitchen we took out the dated light fixture over the island and added pendants by Circa Lighting. We also added a breakfast bar onto the island by adding a stainless steel bar at the left edge of the island. (it's barely visible in the upper picture)
The island is distressed in BM's Fieldstone. The granite top was too $ to replace, so we worked with the granite colors and now like it alot better.

The wood & iron lighting above the breakfast table and the dining table we added from Four Hands Home.

More house pictures will be coming soon and hope you'll stay tuned for more reveals!

Make it a great Monday and many thanks to all the new subscribers from last week.....huge welcome to all of you!
And if you haven't entered the giveaway, then check the details in older posts. The winner will be announced next Sunday!

xoxo,

NEW FABRICS

Erin of HOUSE OF TURQUOISE has featured one of my projects on her posts the past couple of days. You can find the posts by clicking HERE.

In honor of Erin's favorite color (and mine) I thought I'd share a new fabric book I just received from Kravet's Windsor Smith collection. There are so many new fabrics in this book to love. But my fave one is the Riad pattern in a rich deep turquoise teal, named Aquatik. The color is similar to this gorgeous water I spotted recently on Inspired Design:

Don't you just love that shade? Heavenly.....

There's a coordinate fabric in a pattern called XU Garden in Aquatik as well:The pattern is very similar to the Archipelagos pattern of the pillow I'm giving away ,( see previous post):
However, XU GARDEN is a bit bolder; larger in scale.

There's also a great shade of rich navy blue called INDIGO in the Riad pattern as well:

and the XU GARDEN:
Check out the great pictures of indigo rooms today on DRIVEN BY DECOR. Here's a sampling of
Kris' indigo vignettes:

Wouldn't a room be great with a mix of navy , green & turquoise?

There's also a kelly green in the book too:

Hope you'll check out Erin's amazing blog full of great turquoise love.....HOUSE OF TURQUOISE
A big shout out to Erin! I appreciate the feature so much, and so happy to have new subscribers!

And if you haven't read about the linen pillow giveaway I'm hosting, then check out my older post. The giveaway ends Sunday , March 25th!

For all my H.O.T. followers, I'll be sharing photos soon of my current home with touches of turquoise , teal and aqua palettes.

Stay tuned!

All the best,

Powder Room - Thirty Dollars Update

Did you ever start a project that took forever to finish?  Well my powder room was that project for me.  I started the room way, way back when here.  I was dying for brown room but I after I painted it, I didn't love it but I kept it for at least a year thinking it would grow on me and it didn't.

After living with it for over a year, I still wasn't happy (the dang thing refused to grow on me). While I shopping in Walmart, I bought a gallon of discontinued paint for $4 (Can you believe that price?) and immediately I thought of my powder room.  Yes a plan was forming.

After painting, I loved the color but I felt it was missing something so tada, I thought why not use the stencil I used in the guest bedroom.  Stenciling the wall in the bedroom was easy compared to stenciling the bathroom.  I did a lot #^%$@# when I got to the corners and behind the toilet.  After three days (I took a lot of breaks), I was finally done and it's so worth it and the best part is I only spent $30 for the drastic change. Yes, $30, I love a good bargain.

Cost breakdown
Paint $4
Frames - $11 (I bought them at Michaels for $2.50 a piece when they had the $5 coupon)
Stencil - Free
Gold Paint Martha Stewart - $6
Shade - $8 - Target
Art Work - Free (made by me)

Doesn't my fake flowers look good? #Don'tjudgeme

Loving my free artwork and my $2.50 Michael frames

Now this makes me happy so much better than the brown, what do you think?

TEAL with a twist of LIME

Today I'm excited to share a giveaway with my blog readers! I'll give you the details further down this post, but here's a hint: the giveaway is related to teal and lime decor.

Last year Shades of Light cover page featured a vignette of teal and lime.

I've kept that picture as an inspiration, knowing I wanted to incorporate the look into my decor one day. Recently that day came and I painted an accent wall in our piano room teal.
(click on any image to enlarge)

The color is Benjamin Moore's Beau Green, # 2054-20. . At nightime, the piano room has a glam sparkle to the wall because of the paint finish. The finish I used was BM's Regal Select Paint in Semi-Gloss. I really wanted the high gloss sheen but each gallon is very expensive when you add more gloss to an interior wall paint. The semi-gloss turned out to have plenty of gloss and still has the lacquer look I was going for.
Please note that this type of gloss looks best on flat , non-textured walls. If your walls have any type of orange peel texture, then the gloss won't look right. Gloss shows imperfections in texture or lumps.

Here's a few more shots of the piano room with teal, lime & turquoise accents.

Turquoise is the sister to teal and these colors just make me feel good! Adding a citrus touch of lime to the palette is a great accent.

Kravet's Windsor Smith's Archipelagos fabric in lime, is a great accent color to use in a teal room:

Would you like to incorporate lime into your decor? Here's your chance with our giveaway today!!
