TRAVIS HEIGHTS - Austin Cool!

Written By Unknown on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 | 6:08 AM

TRAVIS HEIGHTS , in Austin, Texas, is an older neighborhood with beautiful homes mainly from the 1920's, with a few dating back to the 1880's along the creek. Travis Heights is "eye candy" for the discerning buyer because you can see many styles of homes from English Tudor cottages, Arts and Crafts bungalows, to Spanish Revival houses. Creative types have also blended in a modern mix of contemporary, "industrial urban" abodes, creating a very diverse & interesting area. The vibrant & eclectic "hood" is full of artistic and interesting people. Located close to the cool SOCO (south congress) area of Austin and within view of the skyline of downtown Austin, the proximity of the "hood", beautiful homes, along with great shopping & restaurants makes this area one of the preferred COOL locales of Austin. Streets meander through charming hills, creeks and ancient trees. The residents of Travis Heights are in the process of making their district an historical neighborhood. However, there's alot of paperwork, etc. that is ahead of them to get the historical certification. A committee of the South River City Citizens Neighborhood Association, a non-profit organization, is currently spear heading the project, fundraisers and awareness for this "hood". Donations are greatly appreciated to help fund the project & you can view their website and more info here.

Check out the above COOL limited edition ,serigraph print by Jon Pattillo of FAT CADDY PLUS. Jon created this serigraph depicting the "hood" for the Travis Heights-Fairview Park Historic District fundraisers. Whether you live in Austin or want a great Texas souvenir, this print would make a great statement in any dwelling.
Take the time to check out the website for FAT CADDY PLUS too.....I love this creative force already, a spicy mix of fun and creativity ! I'll be calling on them this week myself , as I further promote a new incredible band on the Austin horizon: CROWDED HILL ! BTW, CROWDED HILL is looking for new gigs, give me a shout !
I think ole FAT CADDY PLUS looks like just the right avenue to pursue for unique music packaging or graphic design, don't you??

Back to work..........I want to show you a great cottage in the Travis Heights area, currently on the market. My featured abode is a private mini-compound on a quiet street; new construction (built in '09) tucked under the trees. The home's design is intended to create private exterior spaces that transition easily to the interior. The artsy compound is complete with a main house (2688 sq.ft) and an air conditioned studio (443 sq. ft.) above a detached garage.

The home features 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths. Also, the studio is pre-plumbed to add another bathroom.
Look at the landscaping design here. Love it! Nice mix of galvanized aluminum mixed with wood on the entry.
Simple xeriscaping & hardscapes , great exterior paint choices, good light fixtures & exterior design details give this home GREAT street appeal! The arbor offers a glimpse of the courtyard and it already makes you feel welcome.

Above are pics of the courtyard (between the garage/studio and the main house). Notice the raised modern beds of grass mixed with the gravel areas of succulents. I also love wood fences like this, built horizontally, creating a more modern design. Low maintenance with a pleasing & visually different landscape. Homes & gardens I read about in SUNSET LIVING magazine are like this....and alot of this style is now popular in Austin.

Kenny Hilbig is the realtor for this cool house and Kenny sells alot of Travis Heights homes & knows the area . He's a very nice & personable guy and would love to show you this home or many others in the hip Travis Heights area! Our featured home is located at 1705 Newning Avenue, and you can find it under "listings" on Kenny's site.

Now I know you want to see interior shots of the Newning Avenue house , but I'll give you a little peep show show of the master bath details & then you'll just have to check Kenny's site for the rest! (including a great virtual tour!): ....

I love the tiled back wall composed of metallic tiles in shades of black/grey/greens....and the modern mirror and lighting. Two vanities are in the master....but for more info and many more pics, check out Kenny's site !

Make it a great day and we'll chat cottage soon!
J
